Ahead of Liverpool’s Monday night clash with Crystal Palace, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has provided an injury update on Joel Matip. ‘Joel is close to being back’ On Matip’s fitness Jurgen Klopp stated in his pre-match press conference on Friday, “Joel is close to being back. “Hopefully he is able to be in the squad on Monday, so then we will have him.” Dejan Lovren, on the other hand, will miss the Palace game due to a Pelvis issue. Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson has also provided an update on his squad’s injuries heading into Monday’s game with Liverpool. The Eagles boss said on Friday, “The squad is looking very good. We picked up a couple of knocks against Fulham but the players who have had those knocks are now fit, so I now have a full squad to choose from, which is good.” So, it looks as though Crystal Palace are in better shape than Liverpool in terms of injuries. But the Reds will still likely feel they have enough quality to pick up all three points. Mane then added his second and Liverpool’s third shortly after the break. Daniel Sturridge would then come off the bench to make it 4-0 in the 88th minute. Crystal Palace would also kick-off their season with a victory. Palace travelled to newly promoted Fulham last weekend and picked up a 2-0 win. Jeffrey Schlupp
Serie A is seen by many as a league not made for young men, the kind commonly referred to as wonderkids in the football world. However, whether or not that reputation is justified, the Italian top division boasts some of the most exciting youngsters in European football today. Ahead of the new season, we’ve decided to pick out the 10 Serie A wonderkids you must keep an eye on. Some will be familiar, others not so much. 1. Pedro Neto Age: 18 Club: Lazio Position: Winger 2017/18 Serie A appearances (minutes): 0 (0) A number of clubs, notably Spanish giants Barcelona, made a move for the impressive Portuguese winger, but in the end, his boyhood club Braga shook hands with Lazio and Neto – who has played three competitive league matches to date – is expected to play a role in Simone Inzaghi’s exciting squad. 2. Davide Bettella Age: 18 Club: Atalanta Position: Centre-back 2017/18 Serie A appearances (minutes): 0 (0) A graduate of Inter Milan’s esteemed academy, Bettella – who is a centre-back by trade – recently swapped the Nerazzurri for Atalanta, where first-team opportunities are expected to be greater. Yet to make his Serie A debut, that should come this season, but for now, it’s all about keeping his head down and working hard. 3. Enrico Brignola Age: 19 Club: Sassuolo Position: Winger 2017/18 Serie A appearances (minutes): 18 (1,354) Brignola emerged at the backend of last season, where he’d go on to bag three goals across 17 league outings, predominantly from the flanks, for his childhood team Benevento. He’d also create a further two for his teammates; only Federico Chiesa (5) managed to produce more of any Serie A player younger than 21, but this forthcoming season it will be Sassuolo taking advantage of his talents. 4. Musa Barrow Age: 19 Club: Atalanta Position: Forward 2017/18 Serie A appearances (minutes): 12 (444) To say Barrow has started this season on fire is an understatement. Even before a Serie A ball is kicked,
Chievo 2 – Juventus 3 Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t find the target, but he started his career in Serie A with a win on Saturday. Juventus beat Chievo 3-2 in the opening weekend of the season. Sami Khedira opened for Juve, before Chievo took control with goals either side of the break from Mariusz Stepinski and Emanuele Giaccherini. A Mattia Bani own goal drew Juventus level in the 75th minute, while Federico Bernardeschi scored a 90th minute winner. Cristiano Ronaldo vs Stefano Sorrentino In the final moment of the game, Cristiano Ronaldo collided with Chievo goalie Stefano Sorrentino. Sorrentino was knocked out after the coming together. The 39-year-old was eventually taken to hospital for treatment. The good news is that Sorrentino has been released from hospital on Sunday. While the Chievo keeper reportedly has a fractured nose, whiplash and a bruised left shoulder, he’s found time to troll Cristiano Ronaldo on social media. Posting a selfie of his injuries, Sorrentino wrote: Thank you for all your messages of affection and respect. We are a fantastic squad and yesterday we had a brush with greatness: meanwhile, CR7 didn’t so much brush me as get a bullseye! GRAZIE per i vostri messaggi di vicinanza, affetto e stima. Siamo un gruppo fantastico e ieri abbiamo sfiorato l’impresa: mentre CR7 mi ha preso in pieno! 😂😂😂😂😂😂 #ChievoJuve A post shared by STEFANO SORRENTINO (@stefanosorrentino) on Aug 19, 2018 at 3:08am PDT Cristiano Ronaldo back to work As for Cristiano Ronaldo, he’s updated his social media accounts on Sunday as well. According to Spanish outlet Marca, Thibaut Courtois will remain on the bench for Real Madrid tonight as they kick-off their 2018/19 La Liga campaign vs Getafe. You can watch the clash online here. Courtois’s time at Chelsea Courtois signed for Chelsea in July of 2011 from Belgium side Genk for a fee of around £8.06 million. The 26-year-old would then enjoy a three-year loan spell at Real Madrid’s rivals, Atletico Madrid. While at Atletico, Courtois would make 154 appearances, in which he kept 76 clean sheets. Courtois’s impressive spell in Spain would then earn him a starting spot in Chelsea’s net. The Belgian also played 154 games for Chelsea, in which he kept 58 clean sheets. However, Chelsea would have a very disappointing 2017/18 season. The Blues failed to defend the Premier League title, which they had won the year before. Chelsea also finished in 5th place and failed to qualify for the Champions League. As a result, Courtois chose to leave Stamford Bridge in search of Champions League football. Los Blancos took on Atletico Madrid in the final of the UEFA Super Cup. However, Real Madrid’s season did not get off to a great start as they were beaten 4-2 by their city rivals. Karim Benzema and Sergio Ramos would get Real Madrid’s goals while Koke, Saúl Ñíguez and a Diego Costa brace made up Atletico’s four goals. Keylor Navas would also get the nod over Courtois in this
Osvaldo Ardiles reacts to Tottenham win on Twitter, Graham Roberts lauds 26-year-old star - originally posted on Sportslens.com Tottenham managed back to back Premier League wins after beating London rivals Fulham 3-1 at the Wembley Stadium on Saturday. Harry Kane scored his first Premier League goal in August as Spurs maintained their unbeaten run in the season. It looked like the England striker’s barren run will continue after he had a goal ruled out and hit the crossbar at Wembley. Brazilian winger Lucas Moura scored his first Premier League goal for Spurs with a superb curling strike beyond Fabri’s dive just before the break. Fulham, who lost their opening game against Crystal Palace, levelled after the break with Aleksandar Mitrovic nodding in from close range. It needed a moment of sublime quality and inspiration to break Fulham’s resilience and it was provided by Kieran Tripper who restored the lead with a stunning free-kick. Former Spurs player and club hero, Osvaldo Ardiles took to social networking site Twitter to express his reaction after the game. 2 games 6 points. Brilliant. Some of our players still recovering from WC duties. Was with MP and it is great to see him and his “kitchen cabinet” so positive and confident. COYS — osvaldo ardiles (@osvaldooardiles) August 19, 2018 Another former player, Graham Roberts also took to Twitter, to praise Erik Lamela, who made a brilliant run from midfield to set up Kane for the third goal. He tweeted: Nice start to the season loved @LucasMoura7 performance today worked so hard and great goal also @ErikLamela superb when came on and the man @HKane got us his August goal another 50 goals to come this season 😛🙏 COYS — Graham Roberts (@GrahamRoberts4) August 18, 2018 Spurs didn’t sign a single player in the summer transfer window. In a fast-moving night of football, Barcelona beat Alaves 3-0. The win puts Barça top of La Liga and gets them off to an ideal start as they look to retain their title. What did we learn? 1. Messi is ridiculous It’s hard to explain just how good Leo Messi is, but his display against Alavés is a pretty good way to sum it up. For an entire hour Messi didn’t score or assist in the match, yet his fingerprints were all over everything good Barcelona did. It is this ability to so impact a game that sets Messi apart from the game’s other greats. Mr. 5,000 becomes Mr. 6,000. What he did in between will blow your mind. 🤯https://t.co/RXUAEPzgGA — Squawka Football (@Squawka) August 18, 2018 Messi is a forward, yet he played countless penetrative passes against Alavés. His ability to split the atom so readily and repeatedly shames literally every other playmaker on the planet. He can dribble better than anyone, pass better than anyone, and shoot basically better than anyone except perhaps one other dude. He’s ridiculous. Oh, and of course after an hour of being a playmaking wizard, the game was still 0-0. Messi’s team-mates hadn’t taken the chances he had provided, so Messi went and did it himself. Winning a free-kick on the edge of the box he sized Fernando Pacheco up and, having gone high and hit the bar in the first-half, this time he went low, driving the ball under the wall and into the back of the net. Garth Crooks on Arsenal’s Matteo Guendouzi A tweet from Football London’s Charles Watts has gained plenty of attention following the Chelsea game. Watts has reported on the views of Garth Crooks towards Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi. It seems like the BBC reporter is not a fan of the Arsenal youngster as the following was reported: Had Garth Crooks sat a couple of rows behind me in the press room yesterday after the game constantly telling his mate that Guendouzi was ‘killing Arsenal’ and that Wenger would never have played him as he isn’t good enough. Had Garth Crooks sat a couple of rows behind me in the press room yesterday after the game constantly telling his mate that Guendouzi was ‘killing Arsenal’ and that Wenger would never have played him as he isn’t good enough. Still as baffled now as I was then. — Charles Watts (@charles_watts) August 19, 2018 The reason many people are paying attention to this is because Garth Crooks has the job of selecting the Premier League team of the week on the BBC website. That’s lead to some comedy responses on Twitter about the BBC journalist. Yep. Was really confusing. He was excellent again. — Charles Watts (@charles_watts) August 19, 2018 He once decided on this for his team of the week which basically sums up his football knowledge pic.twitter.com/ubAD55DzTd — Aussie Gooner (@Roberto_Holdini) August 19, 2018 Guendouzi & Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was guilty of missing a couple of glorious opportunities in the Chelsea game. On one occasion in the first half, Aubameyang skied a shot over the bar when he seemed certain to score. Many on social media are sharing how Guendouzi reacted to Aubameyang’s miss. The 19-year-old, who was playing second division French football last year with Lorient, fell to the floor to get out his frustrations. 'Liability', 'weak link': Some Leeds fans really lay into 26-year-old ace - originally posted on Sportslens.com Leeds United maintained their unbeaten run in the season under Marcelo Bielsa with a comfortable win over Rotherham in the Championship clash on Saturday. With this victory, Bielsa has become the first Leeds boss to start his reign with four straight wins. The Whites started brightly but they couldn’t get the breakthrough. Also, they were fortunate not to fall behind when Jon Taylor’s shot came back off the inside of the post. In the second half, Luke Ayling put Leeds ahead with a diving header. Samu Saiz had a shot cleared off the line as Leeds looked for the winner. Kemar Roofe, who scored twice against Derby County, slotted in from a tight angle to earn all three points for Leeds. Overall it was a good performance from almost every Leeds player, but the Whites fans were far from impressed with the performance of skipper Liam Cooper. The 26-year-old made big errors in the first half and he was fortunate that they were not punished. He was very sloppy with his passing, and made a block with a hint of handball. He improved after the break, but many Leeds fans pointed out his poor habit of losing concentration. Leeds fans took to Twitter to express their reaction on Cooper’s performance, and most of them weren’t impressed with his efforts. Here are some of the selected tweets: Armchair fan? I live almost 300 miles away from Elland Road and was a season ticket holder for the best part of ten years. If you think Liam Cooper isn’t prone to mistakes and a liability you’ve been watching a different side the last two years. He was so dodgy today. — Hussey ♠⛳ (@Ryan_Hussey) August 19, 2018 I have watched Cooper on countless games last season and he was diabolical.
Fred to Manchester United Despite finishing 19 points behind league leaders Manchester City last season, Manchester United did not have a very busy transfer window. United signed just three players this summer. These were Lee Grant from Stoke, Diogo Dalot from FC Porto and Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk. Fred was United’s most expensive signing and cost United around £53m. The Brazilian made his United debut in their opening game of the season vs Leicester City. ‘People can already feel his positive influence’ Yet despite Fred only playing one game for United, Jose Mourinho has already been praising the 25-year-old for the positive influence he is having. Mourinho told MUTV, “I think Fred, already with only 70/75 minutes at Old Trafford, I think people already like him. “People can already feel his positive influence on the team. And on the style of football that the team wants to play. “When we brought him here, we knew he could influence the dynamic. Because he could attract other people to follow him in the way he thinks football and the way he likes to play football. “So we are really happy. And a part of that is his character, he’s a good guy to have around, a funny guy and a guy who always has a smile on his face. “He doesn’t speak good English but he speaks with everyone and understands everyone and they understand him. “He’s a really, really good guy and he brought new music to the place because we were a bit tired of [David] De Gea and Ashley Young’s music all the time!” MANCHESTER, ENGLAND – AUGUST 10: Fred of Manchester United in action during the Premier League match between Manchester United and Leicester City at Old Trafford on August 10, 2018 in Manchester, United Kingdom. Former Tottenham star gives his five word reaction on Harry Kane's goal - originally posted on Sportslens.com Harry Kane finally ended his August goal drought with a tidy finish against Fulham yesterday. Tottenham won the game 3-1 with Lucas Moura and Kieran Tripper being the other goalscorers. Fulham got back into the game through Mitrovic but the fightback did not last long. While Harry Kane took to Twitter to send out a sarcastic message after his goal, former Tottenham star Gary Lineker also reacted to the moment on social media. The BBC pundit tweeted: “Finally. It’s Harry Augustus Kane”. Finally. It’s Harry Augustus Kane. — Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) August 18, 2018 Tottenham fans will be delighted to see their star striker back amongst the goals. Harry Kane will be crucial to Pochettino’s ambitions this season. The Londoners have not added to their squad this summer and they will have to rely on the England international once again. It will be interesting to see whether they can win a trophy this season. Spurs have improved a lot over the years but Pochettino is yet to deliver silverware. A world class striker like Harry Kane could make a big difference for his side. From Sportslens.com - Football News | Football Blog
